The Gospel of Moses

Jesus to the Jews at the end of John 5:

"If you believed Moses, you would believe me. For he wrote of me." (5:47)

Amazing.

We get hung up when we put the emphasis on "Moses" instead of on "believed." In other words, the point is not, "If you believed Moses, you would believe me," but "If you believed Moses, you would believe me." The problem was not the Jews' theology but their dispositional stance of unbelief. Their problem was not that they trusted what said Moses too strongly. They didn't trust it enough.
