This song has more or less been a theme song for me over the last 4 years. Two cross country moves, two extended periods of unemployment and Jesus saving me have resulted in a period where breathing is the hard part.
I absolutely love this song! Jars of Clay has consistently brought an incredible mixture of truth and insight into the world into their lyrics. I think I was cry the day this band breaks up.
The cliche "different strokes" comment just doesn't seem appropriate here, nor does a blithe "I just don't get it." If I say I was once a Jars semi-fan, and that I saw them live near Philly between their 1st & 2nd albums, it might soften the blow when I say that I find this song disturbing--both in its message and in its visual imagery. Careful, believers--pop culture and apparently cool look does not necessarily a worthy message create. Then again, maybe I just don't get it. What are they really saying? I mean, no one wants to be alone, but what good does it do to exacerbate the feeling by showing a gruesome image of 6 people gradually drowning while trying to speak. The last few seconds of this video are the stuff of nightmares. I don't need to think any more about my discouragements than I already do, nor do I need to have a visual image of still death in a pool of water to accompany my negative feelings.
